Installation

KeeAgent, like any other KeePass 2.x plugin, is installed by copying the .plgx file to the Plugins folder of the KeePass 2.x installation. The location of this folder depends on how you installed KeePass 2.x (e.g. using an installer or using the portable version).

Windows

Tip

Users of the Chocolatey package manager may find a KeeAgent package there (maintained by a 3rd party).

  1. Download KeeAgent from https://lechnology.com/software/keeagent

  2. Open the zip file

  3. In another Explorer window, open the KeePass 2.x Plugins folder.

    Note

If you used the Windows installer to install KeePass, then the folder will be C:\Program Files (x86)\KeePass Password Safe\PLugins (or C:\Program Files\KeePass Password Safe\Plugins on 32-bit systems).

If you are using the portable version of KeePass 2.x, then hopefully you remember where you installed it.

  4. Drag and drop the KeeAgent.plgx file from the zip file to the KeePass 2.x Plugins folder, replacing the existing file if you have previously installed KeeAgent.

Ubuntu

The best way to install KeeAgent on Ubunutu and it’s derivatives it to use the KeeAgent author’s KeePass 2.x Plugin PPA. This takes care of installing all of the required dependencies and can be updated with apt when a new version is released, just like any other package.

Tip

These PPAs work on Ubuntu derivatives such as Linux Mint and elementary OS as well.

  1. Add David’s KeePass 2.x Plugin PPA to your apt sources:

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dlech/keepass2-plugins
    sudo apt update

  2. Install the plugin:

    sudo apt install keepass2-plugin-keeagent

Note

You can get the latest beta version by also installing the Beta PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dlech/keepass2-plugins-beta
sudo apt update

Install both PPAs if you always want the latest version.

Tip

You can also get the latest version of the keepass2 package from the offical Debian/Ubuntu keepass2 package maintainer’s PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jtaylor/keepass
sudo apt update
sudo apt install keepass2

Other Linux Distros

Packaging for other Linux distributions is maintained by 3rd parties.

Arch

There are several 3rd party AUR packages for KeeAgent.

And, you may find something about KeeAgent on the Arch Wiki.

Debian

For Debian, you should be able to use the PPA for the closest Ubuntu release without a problem. For example, save the following as /etc/apt/sources.list.d/dlech-keepass2-plugins.list:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/dlech/keepass2-plugins/ubuntu bionic main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/dlech/keepass2-plugins/ubuntu bionic main

And add the signing key to your trusted keys:

gpg --recv-keys A8BD96F8FD24E96B60232807B3B4C3CECC10C662
gpg --export --armor A8BD96F8FD24E96B60232807B3B4C3CECC10C662 > dlech-keepass2-plugins.gpg
# then as root
chown root:root dlech-keepass2-plugins.gpg
mv dlech-keepass2-plugins.gpg /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/

Everyone Else

This assumes that you already have KeePass 2.x (and therefore Mono) already successfully installed. If you have not already, install the mono-complete package from your distro. Then extract KeeAgent.plgx from the zip file and copy it to the Plugins folder where KeePass.exe is located. This is usually at /usr/lib/keepass2/Plugins/ unless you are using the portable version of KeePass 2.x, in which case, hopefully you remember where you installed it.

macOS

On macOS, it is assumed that you are using the portable version of KeePass 2.x.

  • Open the folder that contains KeePass.exe.
  • Drag and drop KeeAgent.plgx into the Plugins subdirectory.
  • Restart KeePass if it was already running.
